just tell you that a countrie learn very easy and fast a other language it's Slavian countries (russia, estonia) my wife speak a fluent french on only 1 years and english the same.
i think it's not only with the education it's a other point

I think that French is the large lazy one

And you forgot to mention that Germans and Swedish people are Saxons (or Celtics or Goths... I don't remember). So I think they really have facilities to use the English language !

Yes but not Russian and Polish people who have the same easiness to speak fluently. They are just not afraid to do make a mistake!
That's true Naerth, my ex-roomate was Russian and he learn French and English in 6 months! A huge problem in France is not only the quality of the profs. in English (I met so much many profs. who are not able to speak English that's a shame but true!!) , but much more the ability they have (or not) to make you feel comfortable with the idea of not being able to express something at the first time and with the words you want!

Well that's not quite true countries like Sweden they started to learn English from Kindergarten (la maternelle) and they use English as their second language as in France, the French people and the French government are too proud of the French language and heritage to allow people to use other language beside French. That's my opinion. I don't think you can go to any government agency in France and ask to fill up some paperwork in other language beside French.

Well if you are in the country it helps a lots. I remembered it took me six months to be fluent in the US. I used to know English in school with the grammar and stuff but I couldn't speak, but when you are in the country and you don't have any choice to have to do it

I'm totally agree with you nam ! That's a mix between both facts and some others. We gave meeting me and two friends last year in NYC for a delegation of 35 school directors from France. The main subject was: Is the english teaching in France is enough to be able easily to use the english language. We had a debate according our own experience. The issue starts from the prof.'s knowledge and ends to the student motivation to learn and the point of view of the actual society...That was so interesting!

Well I am taking classes right now to be able to teach English here at highschool or middle school level, beside French you have to have 2 years experience in other language and spend at least a year in France.

I took a advenced course in my University and the woman was even not able to read french ! That was paaathetic !! (to be pronounced like the blond girl in I don't remember wich movie ) She was part of an University clerc!!!

No they are not ! sure ! I have a lot of Med around me, my ex-husband is a doctor (emergency at Hospital) ... I just said, you have to think to the future. Some ways could seem more attractive (and easier) but they often make later a difficult life...
